Museo Archeologico Nazionale Villa e Grotta di Tiberio

Don't miss:
A visit to the museum and
Tiberius Grotto's
This beautiful coastal complex including the Villa of Tiberius, the great cave and the Archaeological Museum is located on Via Flacca. The Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga, found at the site of the villa, was built in the early sixties to house valuable sculptures that were found in the excavations that had been conducted at the site since 1957. The highlights of the collection include the famous sculpture of Ulysses’s head and the spectacular Hellenistic marble statues depicting the various stages of the Odyssey: the SCYLLA group (Scylla’s assault on the hero’s ship), the CYCLOPS Group (the blinding of the Cyclops), Palladio and Ganymede. Sculptors Agesander, Atanodoro and Polidoro, were the creators of the Laocoon. The villa was built by the Emperor Tiberius (I cent. AD) as a vacation getaway for himself and his entire court.
